Vibrating Column Of Air

The voice is both moving muscle and moving air.  The vocal muscles adjust the cords for the pitch, and there is a specific size of the glottal slit.  The moving air passes through this glottal slit, vibrating in a pattern as determined by the slit. Thus, air is crowded together into a column of a certain diameter, height, and direction depending on the adjustment for the particular pitch.
